What you need to look for when buying the perfect tower battery for your sound system

Today, many sound systems, like tower speakers, are battery-powered, allowing you to take your sound system almost anywhere. But to get the best out of your battery-powered sound system, you’ll need the right tower battery.

There are many batteries for sound systems out there, but not all of them will be right for your speaker, so let’s take a look at what you need to consider when choosing a tower battery for your sound system.

The battery chemistry

There are two popular types of batteries; lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries are the most common choice for sound systems, mainly due to their availability and low cost.

There are two kinds of lead-acid batteries available;

  1. *.Flooded lead-acid batteries: These offer more power and durability, but have a relatively short lifespan.
  2. *.Sealed lead-acid batteries: These batteries are spill-proof and easy to transport, but their lifespan is shorter than flooded lead-acid batteries and don’t have a big power output.

Generally, lithium-ion batteries offer better performance and longevity than regular lead-acid batteries. Thanks to their high energy density, they’re also lightweight, making them much easier to transport. Also, their lifespans are 2-3 times longer than lead-acid batteries.

Additionally, lithium-ion batteries are maintenance-free and can charge much faster than lead-acid batteries.

    The battery quality

There are many tower batteries for sound systems out there, but not all of them are of good quality.

When you search for batteries online, you may find a lot of third-party batteries for low prices. These may look tempting, but they might not always be compatible with your sound system and they may be of poor quality.

For example, poor-quality batteries may have voltage fluctuations that can distort the audio, making your listening experience less enjoyable. Also, bad-quality batteries may heat up quickly and this may cause damage to your sound system's internal components over time.

    The battery capacity

If you want your sound system to run for a long time, you need to think about the capacity of the tower battery. The battery capacity is measured as milliampere-hours (mAh) and the higher the capacity is, the longer the battery can work before needing a recharge.

Make sure to take a look at the power consumption of your sound system. Ideally, the battery capacity should be at least 20% higher than the sound system’s power consumption.

    The Depth of Discharge

The Depth of Discharge, or DoD for short, is the percentage that the battery can be discharged safely without damaging the battery.

In most cases, battery manufacturers will recommend not discharging the battery beyond a certain level to extend its lifespan. The DoD for lead-acid batteries is typically 50% and for lithium-ion batteries, about 20-30%.

    The power output

A battery’s power output is measured in watts or kilowatts, this will determine how much power the battery can deliver to your sound system. For the best possible performance, the battery’s power output should match or exceed your sound system’s power requirements.

    The brand reputation and warranty

When getting a new battery for your sound system, it’s important to take into account the manufacturer’s reputation. Well-known manufacturers usually produce high-quality batteries, thanks to their superior quality control and customer service.

Also, see if you can get a comprehensive warranty with the battery. The warranty shows that the manufacturer is confident in their product and you won’t have to worry about losing money if the battery doesn’t work as intended.

To be on the safe side, you may want to buy a tower battery from the manufacturer of your sound system. This will ensure that the battery is perfectly compatible with your sound system and you won’t need to worry about poor audio quality and other battery-related issues.

    The cycle life

Cycle life is how many charge and discharge cycles a battery can go before its capacity drops below a certain threshold. Normally, the threshold is usually about 80% of its initial capacity.

Batteries with longer cycle life will last longer and won’t need to be replaced often. So getting a battery with a long cycle life can be very cost-effective.

Generally, lithium-ion batteries have a longer cycle life of up to 3000 cycles, while lead-acid batteries have a much lower cycle life at 500 cycles or less, making them a poor choice for a sound system that you plan to use often.

The value and cost of the battery

Lead-acid batteries are usually cheaper than lithium-ion batteries but they don’t last as long and have higher maintenance requirements—this could result in a higher long-term cost.

While lithium-ion batteries have a higher upfront cost, they may offer better value down the road thanks to their lower maintenance requirements, longer lifespans and higher energy density.

Before buying a battery, make sure to take into account the total cost of ownership as well as potential maintenance costs when choosing a battery.

    FAQs

Can I use a car battery for my sound system?

You can do this but it’s not recommended. Car batteries are lead-acid batteries and they can struggle to provide enough power for high-audio moments.

How can I get rid of an old battery?

Place the battery inside an anti-static bag and hand it over to your nearest recycling centre. Don’t place the battery with regular trash as this could lead to the battery ending up in trash compactors and causing fires.

    Should I buy a second-hand tower battery?

No, second-hand tower batteries are likely to have deteriorated and might no longer have the capacity they used to have.
